What is Montessori Education?
It is an educational approach developed by Italy’s first female physician and educator, Maria Montessori (1870-1952). She is acclaimed for her educational method that builds on the way children naturally learn.
Montessori education recognizes individual differences in each child and teaches each child according to his developmental needs. The teachers create an environment that is developmentally appropriate for the child and provides the freedom for the child to select and repeat until the child is satisfied so that the child can achieve fulfillment and confidence.
Montessori Education Contents
- Daily Life Activities to teach ways to take care of self and the environment
Students practice everyday life activities using materials of appropriate size. These activities include using a spoon, sewing, beading, cleaning, doing laundry, serving food, walking, greeting and etc. Through these activities, students practice independence, concentration, sense of order, and motor control capability.
- Sensory Education to develop five senses
Sensory teaching materials will not only aid in keen development of five senses using matching sounds, matching color, differentiating weight, smell, and taste, but aid in development of mathematic concept using matching, ranking and categorizing.
- Mathematics to develop area of the brain associated with mathematical skills
Using concrete materials, children learn operations using hands-on approach. The materials will aid students understand abstract concept on numbers. Mathematics materials include number rods, addition box, golden beads, stamp game, wooden number cards and etc., and using these materials, students not only learn number concepts, but also develop independence and self-discipline.
- Language Education that is multisensory and systemic
Children in ages 2 – 5 groups are in their sensitive period for language. Student’s interest is brought out by providing activities to promote interest in vocabulary, communication ability, reading, and writing. This program is focused on improving writing, reading, writing and speaking using materials such as sandpaper letters, movable alphabets, and etc.
- Social / Cultural Education to learn new knowledge and environment
Children are given the opportunity to develop interest in geographic, animals, and plants by experiencing items from nature.
The focus of Project Approach is to increase children’s understanding of the environment and strongly promote their desire to explore further. Rather than focusing on finding the answer to the question, the children and teacher explore together towards problem solving and through this process, students learn more than just the topic.
Reading Project – Development of language skill by reading and discussing stories of various genres, and expressing by writing, book art, and crafts. Combination activity of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Storytelling – Integral language program by retelling the story using language, arts, physical activities, music and etc. after listening to the story.
Nuri Mathematics – Program to increase the number concept and develop fundamental calculation by applying elementary school curriculum to early childhood common curriculum.
Nature / Science / Cooking – Exploration program to build knowledge by experiencing many activities such as observing change and growth of nature (growing plants, etc.), conducting scientific experiment, and cooking (field trips, growing plants, etc.)
